  • July 3, 2008. Pinetown, NC.. The funeral of Spc. Joel A. Taylor, assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas; died June 25 in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device on June 24, 2008. He was 20.. Members of the honor begin the ceremonial flag folding. The flag from the coffin will be given to Spc. Taylor's father, Scottie A. Taylor. Other flags will be given to his mother, Caren Newman, and his grandparents.


  • May 3, 2008. Raleigh, NC.. Local bike advocates organized and "alley cat" race around downtown Raleigh, consisting of a series of checkpoints and challenges to test the abilities of the riders to navigate city streets and complete the variety of space race themed challenges. The participants were split into 2 teams, the Cosmonauts and the Astronauts and covered much of the ground between NC State campus and the west end of downtown Raleigh.

  • March 19, 2008. Chapel Hill, NC..Hundreds of students marched from the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill to protest the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq.

  • A highway marker honoring the 1957 sit-in at Durham?s Royal Ice Cream Parlor was unveiled during a dedication ceremony June 23 at Union Baptist Church, near the site of the segregation protest at the corner of North Roxboro Road and Dowd Street. The surviving three of the ?Royal Seven? protestors?Mary Clyburn Hooks, Virginia Williams (behind the marker) and protest organizer the Rev. Douglas Moore (pointing in the center)?received a rousing ovation and full celebrity treatment. Local black history enthusiast R. Kelly Bryant (far left) applied for the state marker four times before it was granted.

  • Suspected illegal aliens being processed inside Wake County Jail?s new 287(g) processing center, where persons already in custody must prove their residency in the United State of America or face deportation by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent based in Raleigh, NC. Since beginning the 287(g) program on July 14, 2008, detention officers at the Wake County Sheriff?s Department have process over 300 suspects in violation of 287(g). NEED TO FACT CHECK ..

Responding to the highly contested race for the US Senate seat of North Carolina, between herself and Kay Hagan, incumbent Elizabeth Dole held a rally at the VFW hall in Cary to raise support for local Republican candidates and the presidential ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin.

The players are unpaid and the league continues to struggle with financial issues, but many o the players see this as their last shot at a career in football..
